SESSION 1: THE INTERPRETING MARKETPLACE

SPEAKER: NATALY KELLY, COMMON SENSE ADVISORY
Ms. Kelly will present Common Sense Advisory's findings on the current market conditions and trends for interpreting services, to include both supply- and demand-side data. This presentation will detail the most significant drivers - such as international business and domestic multiculturalization, major suppliers in the market, new technologies and the impact on service delivery, and an analysis of the breakdown across different industry sectors.

SESSION 2: LEGISLATION & LOBBYING

SPEAKER: BRUCE L. ADELSON, ESQ., CEO - FEDERAL COMPLIANCE CONSULTING, LLC
Part One, Keeping it Legal: State & Federal Legislation Relevant to the Interpreting Profession, will be dedicated to an overview of existing law governing the interpreting field, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Americans with Disabilities Act, relevant state legislation concerning interpretation and language access, recent trends in the prosecution of interpreters, and the Federal Trade Commission ruling regarding professional associations.

SPEAKER: B. KENT BURTON, CONGRESSIONAL LOBBYIST
Part Two, Lobbying: What Works on the Hill, will provide participants with the nuts and bolts of effective lobbying in Washington, D.C., including an analysis of which strategies have been most successful for professions similar to Interpreting.

SESSION 3: STANDARDS SNAPSHOT, EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION

SPEAKER: MARJORY BANCROFT, CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS
Part One: A Whirlwind Tour of North America, surveys North America to illustrate how ethics, standards of practice and certification offer compelling indicators of professionalization across interpreting sectors in Mexico, Canada and the United States.

SPEAKER: DR. DIANE DETERRA, DETERRA FIRMA, LLC
Part Two: Education & Certification, will address past and present practices in the training and testing of conference interpreters in the United States and beyond and chart a course for the further development of a national infrastructure for interpreter education necessary to credible certification efforts.

SESSION 4: NEXT STEPS FOR INTERPRETING: MODERATED OPEN FORUM

The day will close with an open forum encouraging all participants to envision what the critical next steps for our profession could or should be.
