The IMIA is an umbrella association that promotes all standards and best practices in the specialized field of medical interpreting. The organization represents over 2,000 practicing interpreters in over 15 countries, with ten international chapters. The IMIA is a voting member of FIT, the International Federation of Translators, an international organization comprised of trade associations worldwide, and is a partner member of AILIA, the Languages Industry Association, Canada. The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing a national, valid, credible and vendor-neutral credentialing program for all healthcare interpreters. CCHI was created by interpreters, for interpreters and the public good, and involves thousands of interpreters and users of interpreter services in defining their future and the credentials by which they will be known and respected. The American Association of Language Specialists (TAALS) is a professional association that represents language specialists (interpreters and translators) working at the international level and determines their qualifications and standards. Membership in TAALS implies adherence to strict ethical standards and confidentiality, years of experience, and having met rigorous requirements for peer sponsorship. Northwestern College, a Christian college of more than 1,200 students in Orange City, Iowa, is rated a top-five Midwestern baccalaureate college by U.S. News & World Report. Northwestern offers a bachelor’s degree in Spanish translation and interpretation for fully bilingual students, one of only four such baccalaureate programs in the country. Students earn 35 credit hours in Spanish, translation and interpretation; take additional courses in public speaking, linguistics, the law, and the liberal arts; practice in a state-of-the-art simultaneous interpreting laboratory; and pursue a senior-year practicum in which they serve as professional translators and interpreters. Program director Piet Koene, the 2004 Iowa Professor of the Year, is one of only 15 Class A certified interpreters for Iowa’s courts. He earned a master’s degree in translation and interpretation, as well as professional certifications in both areas, at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
