The IMIA is an umbrella association that promotes all standards and best practices in the specialized field of medical interpreting. The organization represents over 2,000 practicing interpreters in over 15 countries, with ten international chapters. The IMIA is a voting member of FIT, the International Federation of Translators, an international organization comprised of trade associations worldwide, and is a partner member of AILIA, the Languages Industry Association, Canada. IMIA developed the first international code of ethics, standards, annual conference, registry, and certification and continues to be a pioneer with its recent work: the first Interpreter Educators Code of Ethics and International Medical Interpreting Education Registry. The International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (IAPTI) is an NPO created in 2009 by a group of professional translators and interpreters to promote ethical practices and combat the negative repercussions of globalization on our careers. We focus on the challenges affecting the sector, such as clients' emphasis on price over quality, the proliferation of agencies capitalizing on cheap labor to the detriment of independent translators, subcontracting, and the lack of job stability. The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing a national, valid, credible and vendor-neutral credentialing program for all healthcare interpreters. CCHI was created by interpreters, for interpreters and the public good, and involves thousands of interpreters and users of interpreter services in defining their future and the credentials by which they will be known and respected. The American Association of Language Specialists (TAALS) is a professional association that represents language specialists (interpreters and translators) working at the international level and determines their qualifications and standards. Membership in TAALS implies adherence to strict ethical standards and confidentiality, years of experience, and having met rigorous requirements for peer sponsorship. Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1957, the Association today has members located throughout the Western Hemisphere with several domiciled in Europe and Asia. Northwestern College, a Christian college of more than 1,200 students in Orange City, Iowa, is rated a top-five Midwestern baccalaureate college by U.S. News & World Report. Northwestern offers a bachelor’s degree in Spanish translation and interpretation for fully bilingual students, one of only four such baccalaureate programs in the country. Students earn 35 credit hours in Spanish, translation and interpretation; take additional courses in public speaking, linguistics, the law, and the liberal arts; practice in a state-of-the-art simultaneous interpreting laboratory; and pursue a senior-year practicum in which they serve as professional translators and interpreters. Program director Piet Koene, the 2004 Iowa Professor of the Year, is one of only 15 Class A certified interpreters for Iowa’s courts. He earned a master’s degree in translation and interpretation, as well as professional certifications in both areas, at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
John Benjamins Publishing Company is an independent, family-owned academic publisher headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Founded over 40 years ago by John and Claire Benjamins, the company is currently under the general management of their daughter Seline Benjamins. JB publishes the journal Interpreting plus three other journals in Translation Studies and has developed a major electronic bibliography Translation Studies Bibliography. JB publications are selected under expert academic editorship and peer-reviewing by and for academic researchers and trainers, and include, in addition to works of pure research, excellent university-level course books. JB takes pride in maintaining a constant dialogue with the various academic communities to stay at the forefront of research developments and needs, and in serving as an academic exchange for scholars from every part of the world.
