The Cutting Edge: Bringing Interpreting to the Forefront

The 4th Interpret America Summit
Reston, VA
June 14-15, 2013

Unique Information!

Anyone attending the Summits on Interpreting knows that at InterpretAmerica we have a unique approach to programming. Every year we work hard to take the pulse of the profession and present the most relevant and up-to-date information to the entire field.

This year's Summit will bring back some of our most popular themes and sessions, including the Professional Identity Workgroups, the impact of technology, and a continued spotlight on interpreters in conflict zones during this tumultuous time.

Must-See Keynote Speakers Michael Hyatt and Saima Wahab!

Opening Keynote
Noted social medial expert Michael Hyatt knows how to create highly visible platforms in this overcrowded social media age. We've asked him to turn his expertise to elevating the profile of our entire profession. This will be a not-to-be-missed speech!

Closing Keynote
Saima Wahab is a unique voice in our field. She is one of only a handful of Pashtun female interpreters in the world, who served in Afghanistan and who shared her experiences in the New York Times best-selling book In My Father's Country. Saima's experiences should be heard by all interpreters!

New Logo, New Summit Name!

InterpretAmerica has a redesigned logo and we will soon have a new website!

Along with updating our look, we have changed the official summit name from the annual North American Summit on Interpreting to the InterpretAmerica Summit. The change is in keeping with how many already refer to the Summit. As the event has gained recognition and support, we have chosen to simplify and streamline.

We are excited about our new look and are even more excited to bring you top-notch speakers and cutting edge information at the 4th Annual InterpretAmerica Summit.

New Formats! New Presentations!

We will also be shaking things up for the 4th Summit, with new presentation formats and activities, including:

  • * Social Media Success Stories and Social Media Moot - Two new forums for our field's most prominent bloggers, writers, and social media experts.
  • * Interpret-ED - Dynamic presentations for individuals to present big ideas relevant to our field in 10-15 minutes
  • * Bringing end users into the fold - from business clients to immigrant communities to the deaf
  • * International Standards - a first-time look at the ASTM standards helping to professionalize interpreting.
  • * Language Services for Those Who Have Served - our Veterans Intiative takes off and we need your help. Join our special Professional Workgroup dedicated to this topic!

Networking!

Attendees have made it clear that the unique mix of representatives from across interpreting make the Summits an invaluable place for networking and gaining perspectives not found at other events. We will be weaving multiple networking opportunities throughout the event.

Critical Link and InterpretAmerica Join Forces!

This year, InterpretAmerica is proud to be coordinating our efforts with Critical Link 7. This one-of-kind international conference on community interpreting is held only once every 3 years. In 2013, the Critical Link 7 event will be held immediately following the Summit on Interpreting from June 17-21 at Glendon College of York University in Toronto, Canada. Critical Link 7 will bring together representatives from every sphere of the public service interpreting community, in both sign and spoken language. Academics, interpreting practitioners, employers, trainers, policy makers, service providers and service recipients will have the opportunity to participate in a stimulating international exchange of information, knowledge and skills. We will be providing travel options and special discounts for those who will be attending the Summit on Interpreting and Critical Link.

In just 3 years, these Summits have become a must-attend event for our field. Be sure to mark your calendars and check the website often as we build our program!

We continue to confirm plans for the 4th InterpretAmerica Summit, so be sure to check back regularly so that you don't miss any of the details. In the meantime, be sure to check out our blog - InterpretAmerica Blog

Take Note! IA Co-President Katharine Allen to Pen Book on Note-Taking

InterpretAmerica is proud to announce that IA Co-President has been commissioned to author a book on note-taking for consecutive interpreting in non-conference settings.

The following is an excerpt from Cross Cultural Communications weekly newsletter. You can sign up for Intersect here.

Culture and Language Press is thrilled to announce we will have a new title coming out later this year--a great contribution to the field of community interpreting. The working title is:

    TAKE NOTE
Strategies for Successful Note-taking in Interpreting
    by Katharine Allen, MA

Let's face it: most community interpreters are not effective note-takers. Yet the need to master note-taking is huge, and far too long ignored. Most conference interpreters are well trained in note-taking. Not so community, court and business interpreters.

Your time is coming. In November 2013, an extraordinary book by the Co-President of InterpretAmerica and a national leader in our field will [be published].

Note-taking is a vital skill. This book fills a huge gap and will provide practical guidance and field-tested techniques to help working interpreters improve their note-taking skills.
